A very close friend of Don's over the years is our classmate, Terry Kramer. Terry visited Don in Switzerland on a near annual basis. Terry provides the following information about Don's passing.
Rick, thanks for your e-mail. Yes, Don passed away, Thursday, June 16, 2011. After suffering with lung cancer ... since 2007 and a brain tumor ... . I talked with his brother, Barry, after talking with Don [last week]. Barry and his wife, Marcia, left ... to visit Don and his family in Geneva for two weeks. Barry called on on Thursday to tell us that Don had passed away during the evening from a heart attack. He and his wife had been out to dinner with Don and Salome [Don's wife] the night before and had an enjoyable evening before retiring at 10 pm. He said that Don passed away without further suffering from his cancer and tumor.
Barry said that the visitation would be in the Geneva home until Sunday, [19 June 2011]. He said that Don would be cremated ... on June, 20, 2011 and that there would be a memorial service at his church in Geneva on Thursday, June 23, 2011. Barry and Salome said that his ashes would be brought back to Moline to be buried next to his parents in the cemetery on 34th Avenue and 50th Street in Moline at a date in the future. They said there would be a memorial service here [in Moline] at that time. ... Don is survived by his wife, Salome, ... and their children, Helen, Andrew and Margrit ... in Geneva and by his two sons, Rick with wife Mary Anne and two grandchildren Pacia ... and Nathan ... in Ventura CA, and Christopher in Seattle, WA. Don was a practicing CPA in Geneva for over thirty years ...
It is sad to say that we have lost another friend and classmate of the class of 1962. He will be greatly missed. We look forward with the sweet hope of our blessed reunion in heaven.

On Sunday, 10 July 2011, the following obituary notice was published in The Dispatch:
Don Howard Curtis, 67, formerly of Moline, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at his home in Geneva, Switzerland.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline. Private burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augustana College or SOS Children's Villages. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is assisting the family.
Don Howard Curtis was born April 29, 1944, in Davenport, son of Elwood Curtis and Helen Yeomans Curtis.He graduated from Moline High School in 1962 and from Augustana College in 1966.He worked for Haskins & Sells in Chicago, Geneva and Baltimore. After leaving H&S, he returned to Switzerland as CFO of a small Swiss company. He then set up Curtis & Company SA, a financial management and tax practice, which he ran for 30 years until his death.
Don married Kay Whitebook in 1964; together they had Richard and Christopher. They divorced in 1982.In 1985, he married Salome v. Steiger and their children are Helen, Andrew and Margrit.
Don is survived by his wife, Salome; his children, Richard (married to Marianne), Christopher, Helen, Andrew and Margrit Curtis; grandchildren, Patia and Nolan Curtis (Richard's children); and brothers and sisters-in-law, Count and Kathryn Curtis, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Barron and Marcia Curtis, Davenport.

Don will be greatly missed by his family and many old friends. I wish I had been able to see him more often in our later years, but Switzerland is a long way from Arkansas.
