Sam was a fun guy and a great athlete. He was one of the best high jumpers in the quad cities and also one of the best picthcers. He would alternate nights with track practice and baseball practice. One Saturday he came from pitching and winning a baseball game to the track meet where he won the high jump.

I remember "hearing about" Sam when in 9th grade and we (Coolidge) were about to play John Deere in basketball. Rumor had it John Deere had a kid that could "dunk it"! That was Sam. First kid my age I ever saw do that.
Rest In Peace, Sam.

Sam was a great all around athlete. ("MAN COULD HE THROW A BASEBALL")! I ran against Sam once in Jr. High School, 440 yard dash, and he beat me! If Sam wanted to, he could have been a really good 440 yard dash athlete. But he was such a good athlete in the High Jump, he decided to stick with High Jumping, and not have to put all that work in, running lap after lap, under Gene Shipley! Sam could have made the Mile Relay, with no problem at all, if he was willing too. Man, I loved the mess, out of Sam DeMeyer! May God Bless him
